I noticed something about video games recently. They’re really expensive. Actually, I’ve known that for a long time, but it’s never really seemed as apparent as it is now. The economy is mediocre at best, and there’s a wealth of amazing-looking new games, but they’re almost all in the $50-60 range. What’s a poor gamer to do? You can bug your friends to borrow stuff, but that’s annoying and unreliable, and what happens if they want it back before you’re finished? You could resort to piracy, but even ignoring the fact that it’s illegal, you’re also wandering around on shady sites and putting your computer at risk, and modifying a console to play anything pirated is a massive pain.

Well, being rather poor myself, I figured there had to be another way to play games and save money. I’ve been scouring the internet for any games I could find for free, and I’ve discovered two things in my travels. First, there’s a lot out there as long as you know where to look. There are sites that offer flash games for free, you can find Facebook apps, and there are a lot of free-to-play MMOs that sustain themselves on individual transactions rather than making you pay a subscription fee. The second thing I found out was that there’s a surprising amount of originality in free games. Because individual developers are working on a smaller budget than mainstream studios, they don’t have to make as much in order to turn a profit and can thus try new and unique types of games that big-budget studios consider too risky.

That’s why I’ve decided to start Freeware Fanatic! Every week, I’ll be bringing you the best of flash games, Facebook apps, and MMOs, plus reviews of new free-to-play games and the latest news on upcoming titles.  Hope you like it!
